The Head of Criminal Division, Hon. Justice Michael Elubu, on November Thursday 24, 2022 students of Galaxy International School through the journey of becoming a Judge and what it means.
The students were at the Judiciary Headquarters to tour the facilities and also learn how the court system works.
Hon. Justice Elubu took the students through the role of the Judge in the adjudication process.
The Judiciary Public Relations Officer, HW Jamson Karemani, took the students through the structure of the Judiciary and expounded on the Roles of Judicial Officers.
The students freely interacted with the Judicial Officers, asking among other things career guidance, what subjects they need to study to become Judges, why the death penalty still exists and why Judges are robed.
The students were informed that Law is a noble profession and encouraged to pursue it. And that while the death sentence is not mandatory for capital offenses, it still exists in Uganda. On the issue of robes, the students were told, these were inherited from the English culture.
The Head of Humanities and Social Sciences Department, Mr Kalyango Samuel, thanked the Judiciary for hosting the School.
Mr Tebandeke Edward, a teacher at the School, said there should be continuous education on court systems in schoolsto enable the school community to appreciate the legal system.
Mr Kalyango, said they were delighted to be warmly welcomed to the Judiciary. He said the select number of students are aspiring lawyer
Ms. Isabella who spoke on behalf of the students said it was an insightful interaction that has enabled them to make informed decisions. She described the engagement as inspirational.
The students visited different chambers including that of Hon. Justice Isaac Muwata. They also were also taken to the library.
The climax of the tour was attending a court session presided over by Hon. Justice Elubu.
